The name "Arul Maria Illam" is Tamil and means "House of Mary’s Grace". Puduvadavalli is a small village with a pilgrimage church, located about 90 km away from Kotagiri in the lowlands.
In June 2013 the kindergarten was supplemented by a primary school with grades 1 to 5.
There are three school buses available for the children from the villages in the surrounding area.
